A Smile of Hope

Updated: Aug 30, 2019

Only one month old, a baby girl, Darin Thookdee, had to lose her left arm because of a car accident.

It was a tragedy as her uncle died in that accident too. She was born in quite a poor family; they work at construction sites - moving from one place to another when their work at the site finish. Now she is 12 years old and for all her life she has lived with one arm. She won the first prize for her beautiful handwriting three years ago, and was the second place at the painting contest for disabled students grade 1-6 two years ago; the contest was held for every school in the district.

Darin’s family is working at our foundation’s construction site at present, until recently, her mother joined Dharma sessions at the foundation several times with her faith in practicing Vipassana. The little girl then had been given a great opportunity to be able to live a normal life but even better by Venerable Ajahn Kittiched Siriwattago, a chairperson of Buddhamahametta Foundation. With Phra Ajahn Kittiched’s kindness and everyone’s assistance, Darin is now taken care by Sirindhorn School of Prosthetics and Orthotics (SSPO) where she can practice and learn how to use her new prosthetic arm effectively. We can see a smile on her face when she started getting familiar with the arm. Then later when she grows up, she will get replaced with a better prosthetic arm.
